Brief about the department of pharmacognosy


   The department of pharmacognosy was established with the beginning of the establishment of the College of Pharmacy/ University of Dhi Qar, for the academic year 2012-2013 AD to provide the community with scientific and specialized pharmacist  in the field of drugs and medicinal plants and to provide high-quality education for the college students in the field of medicinal drugs which extracted from various natural plant sources.

The department is interested in  learning the students all the The theoritical and laboratory methods that  related to extraction of the active ingredients with therapeutic potency from plants, methods of isolating and purifying them, the possibility of making a chemical changes to these substances for the purpose of obtaining new derivatives  and knowing the therapeutic effect of all plants components.

Vision

The department of pharmacognosy  teaches the practical and the theoretical subjects that contribute to educating our students about the active ingredients in plants  that have a therapeutic effect, identifying drugs that come from natural sources and as well as identifying the semi-synthetic drugs that are extracted from plants and animal products and then subjected to a limited chemical change in order to make them usable for human  and to avoid their side effects.

The Message

The department message lies in educating the community about the proper methods that must be followed to know the herbs that can be used as a safe and effective medications,  these herbs must be examined, their concentration is known, and the type of active substance should be proved according to the herbal pharmacopoeia which provide the amount  and the effective concentration of active ingredients of  herb that can be taken  safely  to avoid the side or the harmful effect of these materials.

The Goals

• The branch is interested in learning the students (theoretically and practically), the different types of medicinal plants and their  classification according to their shape, active ingredients and pharmacological effects.in addition to the biosynthetic route in plants

  learning the students the modern methods and techniques to separate the components of medicinal plants by  using laboratory equipment’s, as well as the characterization and purifications methods for these compounds in the laboratory
